10 cosmetic ingredients to avoid during pregnancy

The ingredients in the creams and beauty products that we apply every day can penetrate the body, and thus can expose the baby to potentially toxic substances..

Pregnant woman: the 8 most dangerous endocrine disruptors

Here is a list of the main ingredients to banish from your bathroom during pregnancy, which are often found in conventional cosmetics:

  • aluminum salts (often in deodorants)

  • parabens and phenoxyethanol (found in many beauty products as preservatives)

  • le triclosan (que l’on trouve dans de nombreux dentifrices)

  • formaldehyde and ammonia (mainly found in hair color and varnish)

  • formaldehyde and ammonia (mainly found in hair color and nail polish)

  • benzophenones (which act as UV filters in conventional sunscreens)

The good news? By favoring organic and natural cosmetics you will avoid these toxic ingredients :)

But be careful, some ingredients that are also found in natural beauty products should be avoided during pregnancy as well.

Retinol, AHA, self-tanner ... what should you really ban when you are pregnant?

On évite:

  • Salycilic acid (or BHA): it is found in many anti imperfections and anti acne care, including in organic cosmetics where it is derived from 'willow bark. This naturally occurring component in aspirin is not recommended during all pregnancy and breastfeeding as a precautionary principle, it should be replaced by other safer acids such as AHA or acid glycolic.

  • Retinol and derivatives of vitamin A: an active ingredient highly appreciated for its anti-aging, anti-spots and anti-acne properties, but not recommended for expectant mothers because too stimulating and sensitizing.

We allow ourselves:

  • Fruit acids (or AHA): yes, but with caution! Totally safe for pregnant women, they gently exfoliate your skin (and replace grain scrubs often too abrasive). Warning, the skin tends to be more sensitive during pregnancy, do not abuse using peels either (especially if you were not used to using it before) and prefer care low in AHA so as not to risk irritating him. As a general rule, it is necessary to take into account the concentration of the active ingredient in the formula and the fact that the product rinses or not, and save the treatments based on AHA rather at evening because they can increase skin's sensitivity to the sun

  • Self-tanners: yes, but natural! The DHA contained in self-tanners presents no risk during pregnancy, on the other hand self-tanners in spray and in the cabin must be avoided. Use organic and natural self-tanners with cleaner formulas.

Grossesse & huiles essentielles: danger ou paranoïa?

Essential oils, commonly used in organic cosmetics, are 100% natural but keep in mind that these are powerful active ingredients which enter the blood and work throughout the body.

So should we ban them or not? We tell you everything.

Are essential oils in cosmetics dangerous?

If pure essential oils are to be handled with care, do not forget that the concentration in essential oils in your beauty products remains crippled (often around 2% maximum) , and these are diluted with other ingredients.

As summarized by Joseph Grivon, formulator of CHO Nature products, essential oils are not all advised against for pregnant women, and only a toxicologist can define it.
In toxicology, the reasoning is based on the frequency of application, the mode of application (example: rinsed / not rinsed), the dose and the toxicological profile of the raw material used and / or of the product. The toxicological study leads to a mesure of the admissible limit dose and safety margin. This means that sometimes in a formula, even in the presence of a raw material which could seem problematic, it is not (for example, in the case of a low concentration).

The most important thing is to be comfortable with the cosmetics that you apply on your skin, if the essential oils bother you, put them aside during pregnancy :) Do not hesitate also seek advice from your doctor or midwife if in doubt.

No essential oils during the first trimester of pregnancy

By precautionary principle and even if the risk is theoretical, it is better not to use essential oils during the first 3 months of pregnancy.

From the fourth month you can use essential oils for external use only, carefully and always avoiding applying them to the abdominal area and the chest.

Always be sure to choose products with a low dosage of essential oils (less than 3%).

You can also replace essential oils with hydrosols, safe for pregnant women.
