How to know your skin color ?

For most foundations, the shades are characterized in two parts. The complexion then the undertone. For example : fair complexion with warm undertones. But how do you know which is the winning duo ?

Light, tanned, dark complexion ? Know everything about your skin tone

Not sure if you have fair or light skin ? Are you hesitating between a medium and tanned shade ? It is about knowing the skin tone or the shade of your complexion.

Here are all our tips for getting to know your skin tone :

•  Porcelain skins do not expose themselves to the sun, as they can sunburn in just a few minutes. Very often, they do not find a shade light enough for a large majority of face products.

•  Fair skins burn easily and quickly in the sun, in about an hour. People with this skin tone usually wear the lightest shades of foundation, or find most foundation shades too dark.

•  Light to fair skins can tend to burn in the sun. This is probably the lightest shade or the second lightest shade of foundations.

•  Light skins can gradually tan with regular sun exposure after sunburn. They usually wear the second or third shade.

•  Light to medium skins rarely sunburn and tan well. If you alternate between light and medium shades often depending on the season, then this is your shade.

•  Medium to tanned skins tan easily with very rare sunburn.

•  Tanned skins, while they darken easily with exposure to the sun, never get a single sunburn.

•  Tanned to dark skins tan easily. People with this shade change their foundation shade depending on the season, between tanned and dark.

•  Dark skins tan less quickly and easily but are not sensitive to the sun because they never get sunburned.

•  Ebony skins are not at all sensitive to the sun and do not darken after exposure.

Warm or cool skin tone, what's my undertone ?

The most complicated to understand when choosing the shade of your foundation are the undertones, due to their subtlety. What is a undertone, and especially how to determine it ? Rather pink, warm or neutral ? What undertone for pale skin ? For skin with redness ? We help you to decipher it and to know the undertone of your skin !

We have previously seen how to know our shade. The undertones are different and complementary to the hue because it is about their shade. Indeed, any skin tone can have a pink, yellow or neutral undertone.

A pink undertone can also be referred to as a cool undertone. The skin is therefore slightly and subtly pink.

You have a pink undertone if :

•  Silver jewelry suit you better than gold jewelry.

•  Blue clothes suit you better than yellow clothes.

•  Pink blushes look better on your skin tone than coral blushes.

•  Your veins at the wrist look bluer than greener.

Warning : Just because you have redness, blemishes or rosacea doesn't mean your undertones are cold. The undertone applies to all of the skin on the body. The redness does not affect the latter.

A yellow undertone, also called warm undertone, gives a slightly golden tint to the skin, more or less noticeable.

You have a yellow undertone if :

•  Gold jewelry suit you better than silver jewelry.

•  Yellow clothes suit you better than blue clothes.

•  Coral blushes look better on your complexion than pink blushes.

•  Your veins at the wrist appear greener than bluer.

Warning : Just because you're dark skinned or tanned doesn't mean you have a yellow undertone.

Does jewelry suit you whether it's gold or silver ? Pink and coral both suit your skin tone ? Do your veins seem to be a mix between blue and green ? So you have a neutral undertone, namely neither cool/pink nor warm/yellow.

Foundation shade comparator : the infallible tool to find your shade

Many of you ask us which foundation to choose when you are already using a certain foundation from our e-shop !

Thanks to these tables compiled by our beauty expert Margot, find your happiness according to your complexion and your undertone.

If you can't find the exact shade match for the foundation you're looking for, be aware that if you have a cool undertone or a warm undertone, neutral undertone foundations may be right for you ! This is because the neutral undertone indicates that the shade is neither too pink nor too yellow. It is between the happy medium, and therefore suitable for all skin tones. Don't hesitate to check the right column even if you don't have neutral undertones. Your happiness may be there !

If you have an olive undertone, refer to warm undertones. If you have a beige undertone, refer to cool or neutral undertones.

Foundation too dark, foundation too light, what to do ?

Have you bought a foundation but the shade doesn't really match ? Or have you tanned since winter, so the shade is too light for you ? We give you all our tips for making up with a bad shade of foundation, whether it's too light or too dark !

Apply your foundation well

You know your shade, your undertone and have chosen the shade equivalent to your old foundation. But how do you really know if you have chosen the right shade of foundation ?

It is important to try on your foundation on the jawline. Indeed, this is the best way to see if the shade matches both your face but also your neck. Do not try to test a foundation on the inside of the wrist as it is the lightest part of our body, and does not reflect your true skin tone.

To see the true shade of foundation, apply it all over your face and blend in enough. Indeed, it can happen that the foundation is clear, lighter or darker than it really is when we apply only a small amount to our jawline without blurring it.

How to make up for a foundation that is too light ?

If your foundation is too light or if you tanned during the summer, here are all our tips to make up for it :

If the too light foundation has a liquid texture, mix it with just a few drops of Gressa's Bronzer. This will darken the shade without changing the texture, the undertone, or the performance (finish and hold).

If the too light foundation is a loose powder, just mix your foundation with a quantity of Alima Pure's Bronzer. Again, this will not change the finish, texture, performance or undertone of your skin tone.

You can also mix your too light foundation with a too dark foundation, if you have one.

It is also easy to adjust your too light skin tone by applying a bronzer. This will instantly warm up your complexion, and your foundation will appear less light.

You can use your too light foundation as a highlighter to illuminate your complexion. To do this, apply it as a concealer, between your eyebrows, on your nose and on the top of the cheekbones. Bright result and healthy glow guaranteed !

How to make up for a foundation that is too dark ?

If your foundation is too dark or you've lost your tan over the winter, here are all of our tips to make up for it :

If your foundation is too dark, regardless of its texture, mix it with a small amount of too light foundation of the same texture, if you have one. This will darken the shade without changing the texture, the undertone, or the performance (finish and hold).

If your foundation has a cream or liquid texture, mix it with a little moisturizer. This brightens the shade providing extra hydration.

If the foundation that is too dark has a creamy texture, you can mix it with a foundation that is too light. It instantly brightens your foundation.

You can use your too dark foundation as a bronzer to warm up your complexion. To do this, apply it on the top of the forehead, the top of the cheekbones and lightly on the nose, where the sun is naturally hitting on the face.

It's also easy to adjust your dark complexion by applying highlighter. It will instantly illuminate and brighten your complexion, and your foundation will appear less dark.

Regardless, we advise you to always have two shades of the same foundation : one for the cold seasons and one for the hot seasons because we always tan in summer, even when not in the sun. This will allow you to always have the right shade by applying one or the other or mixing them mid-season.
